Sustainable energy to power the community
Joseph Yates was only a junior in high school when he decided to put his interest in engineering to use. He interned at a wind turbine facility in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and learned about turbine design, construction, and efficiency. He then applied that knowledge by helping to erect the turbine (on which he worked) at Langbos Creche and Care Centre.
The turbine is the only power source in Langbos. Its installation brought light to the school and community center for the first time. The power is also used to charge the school's new Kindle tablets and cell phones. It serves as a beacon of hope for an often ignored population.
