Joseph Yates, a Universal Promise volunteer and then a rising senior in high school, decided to put his interest in engineering to philanthropic use. Joe interned at a wind turbine facility in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and learned about turbine design, construction, and efficiency. He then applied that knowledge by helping to erect the turbine (on which he worked) at Langbos Creche and Care Centre. At the time, the turbine was the only power source in the informal settlement of Langbos. The power is used to conduct classes, to charge the educators’ laptops and Universal Promise-donated Kindle tablets, and, at times, residents’ cell phones. Above all, the wind turbine serves as a beacon of hope for the community.
